I think the aspect of working *with* government is an adoption strategy moreso than a core feature of the idea.

Remember, WE are the government. It’s not some secondary entity – it’s us.

In a well designed system, powerful actors from a previous system would have minimal unfair influence.

I agree that the main problem to solve here is the 1:1 mapping, the government stuff is just extra stuff to make it work within the existing system.

I like most of what you wrote, but I have to say your emphasis on working with governments bothers me. Pseudonymity and anonymity are absolutely necessary if freedom of dissent on the Internet is to be preserved. Powerful actors, such as governments, would love to dissolve that freedom by requiring “real” identities be used online at all times.

There are a lot of interesting use cases for digital identities that can be guaranteed to map back to only one person, but we will have to constantly fight to retain our right to *not* use those identities once such a system has been built and proven “in the wild.”
